Microsoft Campus Redmond WA

The company Microsoft was initially based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1979 the company moved from Albuquerque to Bellevue, Washington. The Microsoft Campus in Redmond, Washington, has been the company's headquarters since they went public in 1986. Of course, the campus has expanded a lot since then. Microsoft Campus started with just six buildings. Today Microsoft Campus is home to 83 buildings on the campus itself and 125 buildings in the surrounding area. The buildings on Microsoft Campus range from corporate offices to labs, visitor centers, and even a shopping mall. The Microsoft Campus is so big that it currently provides more than 47,000 jobs to people in the state of Washington.

One fun fact about this campus is that the employees of Microsoft are continually looking to improve not only in regards to the industry, but they have been known to contribute much to the environment and the community. The Redmond Microsoft Campus, in particular, has been awarded a Gold Level Zero Waste Certification due to recycling and composting programs run by employees along with sustainable community partnerships. Microsoft and its employees are known for giving to non-profit organizations and charities. According to GeekWire, the "Redmond-based software company and its employees donated $650 million to charities" in 2016. In addition to that, Microsoft now has a program called Microsoft Philanthropies that works to provide technology for "under-served populations worldwide." Microsoft actively builds a culture that makes giving back and volunteering fun. Many of the fundraisers they do include interactive activities and prizes for participants.

Microsoft Store and Visitor Center

Located in building 92 on campus, the Microsoft Store and Visitor Center is an excellent place to go for fun or when looking to buy new products. During your visit here, you can learn about the history of Microsoft, check out artificial intelligence, jump in the LinkedIn photo booth, try out Minecraft, discover options for Microsoft smart home connected life devices, step into Microsoft's motorsport Forza simulator, experience mixed reality, or sample Xbox gaming. In the Microsoft Store part of the building, you can purchase all sorts of Microsoft computers, phones, software, gaming systems, gifts, Microsoft Swag, souvenirs, and more.

Microsoft Commons

Located on the West of campus sits Microsoft Commons. This building is a shopping mall that conveniently gives employees and visitors access to a food court, hair cutting salon, bank, shopping outlets, and more. Some of the specific stores inside Microsoft Commons include a First Tech credit union, at&t, Sprint, Mode Organic Salon, Yenny Music instrument shop, Eye Care, and Eastside Ski & Sport shop. When you are hungry, grab something to eat at Eastern Grill, the Vegan Corner, Noodle Bowl, the Flying Pie Pizzeria, or Acapulco Fresh - all located within the Microsoft Commons food court. If you are lucky, you might even get to hear a live band playing inside Microsoft Commons when you stop by to grab lunch. Just outside the Microsoft Commons building is a full-on soccer field. This field is used for company activities, as well as official tournaments. According to Microsoft News, "the company hosts two corporate soccer teams...players wear uniforms, travel for tournaments and compete against other big companies' teams to make money for charity."
