How to Get Paint out of Carpet

by Brad McKee

Paint spills in a carpeted area can be the stuff of nightmares for any property owner. Splattered carpet makes your home or business look bad and lose value, but replacing all of the carpet can be a costly endeavor. The good news is that it's entirely possible (if not necessarily easy) to get those paint stains out of your carpet. Roll up your sleeves, and prepare to follow the steps below toward a cleaner floor.

Remove Dried Paint from Carpet

Before you can even begin to address the stains, you'll have to get rid of the paint itself. Find a cleaner with goo- and adhesive-removing properties. It's worth shopping around to find a safe product. Try to find a cleaner that won't discolor the carpet. It won't help very much if you replace the paint with a chemical stain, and you certainly don't want to poison people or pets.

You may want to test the cleaner on a hidden area first to ensure it isn't ruining the carpet. Spray your cleaner onto the dried paint, then lift it out with a putty knife or similar scraping device. Keep your scraper as clean as possible during this process so you don't spread the problem. You might have to take your time and let the cleaner sit a while.

Remove Wet Paint from Carpet

Never scrub paint on your carpet. Doing so spreads the mess and drives it deeper into the fibers. Blot up as much as you can, then move on to address the stains.

Remove Paint Stains from Carpet

Paint leaves a stain even after it's gone. To remove this, you'll need hot water, mild dish soap, and lots of white towels or rags (colorful towels might transfer their dye to the carpet). Mix some dish soap into warm water, and dab from the outside of the stain into the center. Soak up as much moisture as possible to avoid mildew.
